| Reverse description | Alexander the Great, clad in full military dress, stands at the prow of a galley entering a harbour, facing right while turning his head back to look over his shoulder; he holds a spear in his left hand and extends his right hand forward. Two soldiers stand behind him on the same vessel, and the acrostolium of this galley and of the one following bears a bust of Athena. A third galley carries a seated effigy of Athena facing right. To the left of the composition, a herald blows a trumpet from atop a tall tower, evoking the fortified harbour of Abydos. The scene likely alludes to Alexander the Great's legendary crossing of the Hellespont. |
