Reverse description A tetrastyle temple with four columns and a rounded pediment, depicted in frontal elevation, encloses a cult statue of Ares standing left, holding a long spear in his raised right hand and resting his left hand upon a shield set on the ground. The architectural rendering includes a stepped podium and stylised acroteria on the roofline. The Greek legend naming the strategos Gaius Iulius Apronianus and the civic ethnic of the Metropolitans is distributed around the field and exergue. The overall composition is typical of the elaborate civic temple-type reverses produced by Ionian mints under the Severan and early post-Severan emperors.
