| Reverse description | The eponymous hero Abydos depicted standing nude to the left, his chlamys draped over one arm, his right hand resting upon a ship's prow at his feet, alluding to the city's renowned maritime position at the Hellespont. Before him, a cow or heifer stands to the left, head turned back, apparently suckling a calf, a motif likely referencing a local foundation myth or religious tradition. A tree rises in the background, framing the scene. The composition is characteristic of the rich mythological reverse types employed by the civic mint of Abydus under the Conventus of Adramyteum. The Greek ethnic legend is disposed around the reverse field. |
