Obverse description Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, rendered in three-quarter view from the front, with paludamentum visible over the left shoulder. The imperial effigy displays youthful features characteristic of this emperor's portraiture. A Greek legend encircles the bust along the periphery of the flan, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The relief is boldly struck, and the coin exhibits an irregular flan consistent with provincial bronze coinage of the mid-third century AD.

Reverse description Mythological chariot scene depicting Pelops and Hippodamia riding together in a galloping quadriga directed to the right, the four horses rendered in dynamic motion. A small figure of Eros hovers above the reins, holding two torches, symbolising the love that inspired Pelops's legendary chariot race for the hand of Hippodamia. The composition fills the flan with considerable artistic ambition, typical of the prestigious civic coinage struck at Sardis under neocorate status. The encircling Greek legend names both the eponymous magistrate Aurelius Rufinus and the city's twice-neocorate honour, distributed across the field and periphery.
