| Additional information |
Philadelphia in Lydia held the rare distinction of receiving neokorate status — the right to maintain an imperial cult temple — and coins of this size and type were almost certainly struck for distribution during the Koinon of Asia's festival games, the Koina Asias, rather than ordinary commerce. The weight underperforms for a 36mm bronze, suggesting either significant die wear by the time this specimen was struck or deliberate adjustment of the flan weight during Philip's reign.
Aurelius Maximus Julianus, named in the magistrate inscription, served as archon during this issue — one of the few local officials whose tenure can be partially reconstructed through die linkage across the Philadelphia civic series.
