Additional information

Mylasa, an ancient Carian city with an unusually complex civic identity, maintained two distinct urban centers — the old city and Ouranion — connected by a sacred road. Provincial bronze of this size and weight from the Alabanda conventus under Marcus Aurelius is rarely documented in depth; the conventus itself was one of the less administratively prominent of the Asiatic circuits, and Mylasa's output under the joint reign and sole reign of Aurelius remains poorly catalogued relative to the major Carian mints. The 160s saw Aurelius preoccupied with the Parthian War and early Danubian pressures, leaving provincial minting authorities considerable autonomy in production decisions.
