| Reverse description | A tetrastyle temple with four columns frames a standing figure of Macrinus at center, depicted in heroic or imperial pose facing left. In the lower central field, an altar is shown alongside a humped bull (zebu) prepared for sacrificial offering, referencing the votive ceremony. On either side of the central scene, groups of figures stand in a semicircular arrangement, each raising the right arm in a gesture of acclamation or ritual salutation. The reverse composition reflects the civic and religious ceremony of vow-taking (vota) performed at Ephesus in honor of the new emperor, with the ethnic legend of the Ephesians and the vow inscription appearing in the fields. |
