| Obverse description | Laureate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, depicted from the rear in the so-called 'heroic' three-quarter perspective typical of late Severan and Gordian-era provincial coinage. The emperor's paludamentum is visible over the cuirass, conveying his dual role as civil and military ruler. The encircling Greek legend runs along the periphery of the flan, identifying the emperor by his full imperial titulature. The die work, though worn, reflects the provincial engraving tradition of the Smyrna conventus. |
