Reverse description A large octastyle temple depicted in elevation, its eight columns framing a cult statue of Artemis of Ephesus (Artemis Ephesia) standing frontally at centre. The goddess is shown wearing the kalathos (cylindrical headdress) and the characteristic multi-tiered, ornamented garment adorned with supports along the torso, consistent with the canonical Ephesian Artemis iconography. The pediment above the colonnade contains either three doors or two Nikai supporting a globe. The reverse legend ΕΦΕϹΙΩΝ ΔΙϹ ΝΕΩΚΟΡΩΝ, meaning 'of the Ephesians, twice temple-warden,' proclaims the city's prestigious status as a twice-awarded neokorate, a civic honour granted by Rome.
