| Reverse description | Zeus Larasios, the principal civic deity of Tralles, is depicted enthroned and seated left, holding a Nike (Victory) in his extended right hand and a long sceptre in his left. Facing him stands the distinctive cult statue of Artemis Ephesia, rendered frontally in the characteristic Anatolian manner with multiple rows of ovoid objects across the chest, flanked on either side by a stag. The juxtaposition of these two venerated cult images reflects the religious and political affiliations of Tralles within the conventus of Ephesus. The reverse legend, disposed in the field and along the periphery, records the name and title of the local grammateus responsible for the coin's issue. The composition is typical of the ambitious large-module civic bronzes produced by Lydian cities during the mid-third century AD. |
