| Reverse description | Turreted Tyche, the personification of the city's fortune, seated left upon a throne or rock, her head crowned with a mural (turreted) crown. In her right hand she holds a Dionysiac herm, and in her left a cornucopia, attributes reflecting both the civic and religious character of Mytilene. The design is framed by a Greek legend distributed around the field naming the strategos Pompeius Tryphonianus and the city of Mytilene. The reverse type is a well-known civic issue of Lesbos, associating the city's Tyche with Dionysiac cult, for which Mytilene was renowned. |
