| Reverse description | Nilus personified reclines to the left, his body partially draped, resting upon a crocodile that lies beside him; in his right hand he holds a reed, and in his left a large cornucopia from which emerges a small Genius figure holding a wreath. Above the central field, the regnal year numeral ΙϚ (year 13) is inscribed, while water plants are depicted in the lower field, evoking the fertile Nile environment. The composition is a classic Alexandrian type celebrating the beneficence of the Nile, executed in the bold, somewhat provincial style characteristic of mid-Antonine Egyptian coinage. |
