Obverse description Laureate bust of the emperor Trajan facing right, draped and cuirassed, depicted from the rear, conveying a three-quarter perspective typical of Alexandrian provincial coinage. The laureate wreath is rendered with fine detail, and the paludamentum is visible over the cuirass. The surrounding Greek legend runs clockwise around the periphery of the flan. The portrait exhibits the bold, high-relief style characteristic of Alexandrian mint production under Trajan.

Additional information

Year 18 of Trajan's reign corresponded to a moment of extraordinary imperial ambition — the Parthian campaign was underway, and Egypt's mint at Alexandria was producing coinage at pace to support an administration stretched across two continents. The Alexandrian bronze series ran on a regnal year system entirely its own, making L ΙΗ a precise anchor that Roman provincial dating elsewhere rarely offers.

Alexandria's bronzes of this size frequently show flan cracks, a consequence of the mint's practice of casting rather than cutting planchets.
