Additional information

Italica, founded by Scipio Africanus in 206 BC as a settlement for Roman veterans wounded at the Battle of Ilipa, held a unique psychological importance to the imperial house — it was the birthplace of Trajan and Hadrian, though that distinction lay a generation in the future when this piece was struck. Under Tiberius, the city minted in bronze with a regularity that suggests active civic ambition, likely tied to its status as one of the oldest Roman communities in Hispania. The RPC I 66 attribution places this among a well-documented local series, yet survivors in collectible condition remain genuinely scarce.
