Obverse description Laureate head of the emperor Antoninus Pius facing right, with naturalistic portrait rendering typical of Antonine-period Alexandrian coinage. The laurel wreath is visible encircling the head, and the neck is bare. The surrounding Greek imperial legend runs along the periphery of the flan, partially legible due to wear and the irregular edge of the coin.

Additional information

Year 7 of Antoninus Pius's reign, which this coin's regnal date records, fell during a period of deliberate administrative stability in Egypt — Antoninus never visited the province, and no emperor would for decades. Alexandria's imperial bronzes of this period were struck for purely local circulation, inconvertible with the Roman denarius system, a monetary partition that had existed since Augustus formalized Egypt as a personal imperial domain off-limits to senatorial governors.

The L Ζ (year 7) dating places this among the earlier issues of what became a long and prolific reign — Antoninus ruled 23 years, the longest of any Antonine emperor.
