| Reverse description | Tyche of Alexandria reclines to the left upon a ornate couch or kline, wearing the kalathos (modius) upon her head, a divine attribute of abundance and civic fortune. Her right hand rests upon a ship's rudder, emblematic of Alexandria's preeminence as a maritime and commercial centre. The figure is rendered in flowing drapery with the date regnal legend L Β (Year 2) in the field, corresponding to the second regnal year of Antoninus Pius. The composition reflects the standard Alexandrian iconographic programme associating the city's fortune with naval and mercantile prosperity. |
