Obverse description Laureate, nude bust of Emperor Trajan facing right, with an aegis draped over the left shoulder, rendered in the Alexandrian provincial style. The emperor's effigy is boldly modelled, with characteristic portraiture of the period. The Greek legend curves around the periphery of the flan, partially visible due to the irregular planchet. The flan shows characteristic broad fabric typical of Alexandrian bronze coinage of the early second century AD.

Additional information

Year 20 of Trajan's reign in Egypt — the Κ in the date formula — ran from August 116 to August 117, placing this coin squarely within the final months of his Parthian campaign. Trajan had taken Ctesiphon and reached the Persian Gulf, the furthest east any Roman emperor would ever get. The ΕΙΡΗΝΗ (Peace) type appearing at this precise moment is not incidental: it was issued amid a catastrophic Jewish revolt across Egypt, Cyrene, and Cyprus that devastated Alexandria's own population and forced a significant Roman military redeployment from the eastern front.
