Obverse description Heroic bust of Gordian III, radiate and cuirassed, presented in a rear three-quarter view facing left, the emperor depicted as a warrior holding a forward-pointing spear in his right hand and bearing a large round shield against his left shoulder, the shield face decorated with a prominent gorgoneion apotropaic device. The imperial legend is arranged around the periphery of the flan. The treatment of the cuirass and the unusual rear-view bust typology reflect the ambitious and distinctive die-cutting tradition of Nicaean provincial bronzes under the Gordians.
