Additional information

Year 7 of Antoninus Pius's reign corresponds to the Alexandrian regnal year LZ (year 7), a dating convention the Egyptian mint maintained continuously from the Ptolemaic period through the Roman imperial era. Alexandria was the only mint in the Roman world still striking large bronze coinage in this denomination and format during the Antonine period, operating under the prefect of Egypt rather than central imperial authority — which accounts for the distinctly provincial character of its output even when the obverse carried the reigning emperor's portrait.
