The title ΥΙΟϹ ϹΕΒΑϹΤΟΥ — "Son of Augustus" — places this issue during the co-regency years when Marcus Aurelius held the rank of Caesar under Antoninus Pius, before his own accession in 161. The Koinon of Cyprus, the provincial assembly representing the island's major cities, held the privilege of issuing bronze coinage in the emperor's name, a right that doubled as a public demonstration of loyalty. Cyprus had been a senatorial province since Augustus reorganized it in 22 BC, and the Koinon's coinage was one of the few outlets through which that relationship was formally expressed in metal.
