| Reverse description | Full-length frontal cult statue of Demeter standing facing, dressed in a long chiton with veil and wearing a kalathos (basket crown) upon her head. The goddess holds a long torch in each hand, the torches extending nearly the full height of the figure, alluding to her mythological search for Persephone. The reverse legend, identifying the magistrate and the issuing city of Pergamon, is arranged in the field surrounding the figure. The rendering of the cult statue reflects the sacred image venerated at Pergamum and is consistent with the iconographic tradition of Demeter on Mysian provincial coinage. |
