Reverse description The Emperor Severus Alexander depicted on horseback advancing to the right, wearing a military chlamys and couching a spear in his right hand. The composition conveys imperial martial authority in the conventional iconographic tradition of Roman provincial coinage from Phrygia. The horse is rendered in a vigorous forward stride. The encircling Greek legend in the field and exergual area names the city of Philomelium and records the local magistrate Marcus Iulius Paulinus responsible for the issue.
