Additional information

Elis controlled Olympia and jealously guarded that privilege — the right to strike coinage in honor of the sanctuary was effectively the city's primary claim to relevance under Roman rule. Issues under Hadrian carry particular weight here, as the emperor visited Olympia during his Greek tours and showed documented enthusiasm for the Games, making imperial-era Elean bronzes as much a product of diplomatic flattery as of civic tradition.
