Additional information

Aspendus was one of the most prolific civic minting authorities in Pamphylia during the third century, and its bronze coinage under Gordian III reflects a city still exercising considerable local autonomy in the generation before Diocletian's reforms curtailed provincial minting. The city's coins were produced not for imperial circulation but for purely local economic function — trade within the region, temple dues, and market transactions in the Eurymedon valley.

The ethnic legend ΑϹΠΕΝΔΙΩΝ identifies civic rather than imperial authority, a distinction that mattered politically even as Rome tightened administrative control over Asia Minor.
