Obverse description Radiate, draped, and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, seen from the rear, rendered in the provincial Roman style characteristic of Mesopotamian civic coinage. The radiate crown projects prominently above the head, with the paludamentum and cuirass visible at the shoulder. A Greek imperial legend encircles the bust along the periphery of the flan. The portrait conveys the official Roman imperial iconography adapted for local civic production at Edessa.
