Obverse description Laureate head of Demos to right, with drapery visible at the truncation, rendered in the provincial Greek style typical of Phrygian civic coinage under the Severan dynasty. The portrait is encircled by a dotted border, with the Greek legend disposed in the field. The laureate wreath is rendered with careful detail despite the broad flan and irregular striking characteristic of this series.

Additional information

Hierapolis in Phrygia — not to be confused with the Syrian city of the same name — held the title of neokoros, meaning it maintained an imperially sanctioned temple cult, a distinction cities competed for bitterly through embassies and substantial expenditure. The misspelling ΝΕΩΚΟΡΟΝ for the expected ΝΕΩΚΟΡΟΣ on this issue is not a modern cataloger's note but an actual die-cutter's error, preserved in bronze and apparently approved for circulation regardless.

Elagabalus's reign lasted just four years before the Praetorian Guard murdered him at eighteen.
