Year 23 of Antoninus Pius's reign, which this coin's regnal date records, fell during one of the most administratively quiet periods in Roman imperial history — Antoninus famously never left Italy after his accession, governing the empire entirely from Rome. Alexandria's mint continued producing its distinctive bronze coinage on its own dating system throughout, operating with considerable autonomy from the central Roman mints.
