Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Apollo Archegetes facing right, with flowing hair; a lyre is depicted before the bust in the left field. The figure is rendered in the local provincial style with bold, high-relief modeling typical of Phrygian civic coinage of the Severan period. The Greek legend ΑΡΧΗΓΕΤΗϹ runs around the periphery of the flan, identifying the deity as the city's divine founder and protector. The overall composition reflects the close religious association between Hierapolis and its patron god Apollo.
