Additional information

Aegae was a minor coastal city in Aeolis whose civic coinage under the Antonines reflects an administration eager to advertise its relationship with Rome through the naming of local magistrates — here the strategos Claudius Ponticus, whose tenure can be narrowly bracketed to the early years of Commodus's sole reign following Marcus Aurelius's death in March 180. The city held religious significance as a sanctuary of Asclepius, which likely underpinned its continued minting privileges despite its modest political standing within the Smyrna conventus.
