Reverse description A ship's prow oriented to the left occupies the central field, depicted with characteristic nautical detail including oar banks and a serpent or aplustre rising prominently from the deck, referencing Nicomedia's identity as a major maritime metropolis on the Propontic coast. The reverse legend, disposed around the upper periphery, names the Roman proconsul Marcus Plancius Varus as the presiding magistrate and identifies the city as metropolis. A control mark or denomination letter appears in the lower exergual area.
