Reverse description The goddess Cybele, Mother of the Gods, is depicted seated to the left on a high-backed throne, rendered in a formal, hieratic style characteristic of Smyrnaean civic coinage. She holds a patera in her extended right hand and rests her left arm upon a tympanum (ritual drum). A lion, her sacred animal and constant attribute, crouches at her feet to the lower left. The reverse legend, distributed around the field and exergue, records the names of the proconsul and local strategos responsible for the issue.
