Reverse description The celebrated philosopher Pythagoras, depicted as a bearded male figure, seated to the left upon a throne or chair, extending a stylus in his right hand toward a celestial globe mounted atop a column before him; in his left hand he holds a long sceptre. The composition alludes to Samos's pride in its most famous native son, reflecting the city's longstanding tradition of honouring Pythagoras on its civic coinage. The Greek legend naming Pythagoras of the Samians appears in the field around the figure. The rendering is characteristic of the provincial bronze coinage struck at Samos within the conventus of Miletus.
