| Reverse description | Tetrastyle temple depicted in frontal elevation, its four columns supporting an elaborate pediment within which an eagle and a serpent are shown in confrontation, a motif associated with the sanctuary of Mâ at Comana Pontica. Within the intercolumniation stands the radiate cult statue of the goddess Mâ, facing front, her right hand resting upon a shield set on the ground and her left hand grasping a club; the composition emphasises the sacred and martial character of the deity. The reverse legend ΙΕΡΟΚΑΙϹΑ ΚΟΜΑΝΕωΝ ΕΤ ΒΟΡ, distributed around the temple, designates the sacred city of the Comaneans with the year of the local Pontic era, year 202 (= 205–206 AD). |
