Reverse description The xoanon, or archaic cult statue of Samian Hera, depicted standing facing in the field, rendered in the stiff, columnar style characteristic of this celebrated idol housed in the Heraion of Samos. The goddess is shown swathed in a tight, sheath-like garment with arms held close to the body, surmounted by a polos or elaborate headdress. The ethnic legend ϹΑΜΙΩΝ is distributed in the field to either side of the figure, affirming the civic authority of the Samian mint.
