Reverse description The celebrated xoanon-type cult statue of Samian Hera depicted standing facing, rendered in the archaic idol style traditional to the sanctuary at Heraion on Samos, with the goddess shown in a stiff, columnar posture with arms held at her sides. The statue is set upon a plinth or base, faithfully reproducing the ancient wooden cult image venerated in the great Heraion temple. The ethnic legend ϹΑΜΙΩΝ appears in the field to the right of the statue, identifying the issuing civic authority.
