| Reverse description | Apollo seated to the left upon a throne or rock, his body turned slightly toward the viewer, holding a kithara (lyre) in his left hand and extending a laurel branch in his right. The god is depicted in a languid, contemplative pose characteristic of Hellenistic-influenced provincial bronzes. The ethnic legend ΚΟΛΟΦΩΝΙΩΝ runs around the periphery of the field, asserting the civic identity of the issuing city. The overall composition reflects the longstanding association of Colophon with Apollo, whose oracle at Claros lay in its territory. |
