Additional information

The retrograde Ζ on this issue — indicating Cyzicus's seventh neokorate honor — reflects the city's aggressive accumulation of imperial cult temple wardenships throughout the Antonine period. Neokorate status was granted by Rome and jealously competed for among the cities of Asia Minor, with Cyzicus eventually claiming among the highest counts in the province. A reversed letter of this kind is almost certainly a die-cutter's error rather than intentional, and its survival uncontested through production suggests minimal quality oversight at the local mint.
