Additional information

Macrinus ruled for just 14 months — the first emperor never to have served in the Senate, and the first of equestrian rank to hold the purple. His coins from Nicaea are among the few provincial issues that document his reign in the east before his defeat by Elagabalus's forces at the Battle of Antioch in June 218. Nicaea, as the administrative hub of Bithynia, was an active mint for provincial bronze throughout the Severan period and continued striking under Macrinus without apparent interruption.

The brevity of his reign keeps all Macrinus provincials relatively scarce against comparably dated Caracalla or Elagabalus material from the same city.
