(Translation: Emperor Caesar Marcus Antonius Gordianus)
Reverse description Dionysus, the god of wine, stands facing left in a relaxed contrapposto posture, holding a cantharus (wine cup) in his extended right hand and a long thyrsus (fennel staff topped with a pine cone) in his left. A panther, sacred to Dionysus, crouches at his feet to the lower left, completing this characteristic Dionysiac group frequently employed in the civic coinage of Asia Minor. The reverse legend, naming the local magistrate Apollonides, is distributed in the field around the central device. The design reflects the strong Dionysiac cult traditions of the region in the conventus of Pergamum.
