| Obverse description | Radiate, helmeted, cuirassed and draped bust of Emperor Gallienus facing left, holding a spear in the right hand with a shield resting on the left shoulder; the shield's boss is decorated with an equestrian scene depicting the emperor on horseback, spear in hand, galloping over prostrate enemies, with a bound captive visible to the rear. The obverse legend is disposed around the bust in Greek characters. The portrait exemplifies the elaborate composite military bust type characteristic of Aphrodisian civic bronze coinage of the mid-third century AD. |
