| Obverse description | Laureate bust of Commodus with long beard, draped in paludamentum and cuirass, facing right and viewed from the rear, presenting the emperor in his mature military guise. The legend encircles the portrait field in Greek characters, reading ΑΥ ΚΑΙ Μ ΑΥΡ ΚΟΜΜΟΔΟϹ, identifying the emperor by his full titulature. The rendering is characteristic of the provincial Greek workshop tradition of Ionia, with careful attention to the layered garments and facial detail. The cuirass and paludamentum together emphasize Commodus's imperial and military authority, a compositional choice common in Smyrnaean civic bronzes of the period. |
