| Obverse description | Bare-headed, draped and cuirassed bust of Gordian III as Caesar facing right, seen from the front, with paludamentum visible over the left shoulder. The obverse legend encircles the portrait field in Greek characters, identifying the young Caesar by his full name and title. The portrait reflects the provincial workshop style characteristic of Phrygian civic coinage under the joint reign of Pupienus and Balbinus in 238 AD. |
