Additional information

Tyre held the rank of metropolis and, under Caracalla's Antonine Constitution of 212 AD, its citizens gained full Roman citizenship — a shift that amplified the city's appetite for civic bronze coinage celebrating its colonial status. The SEPTIMIA TYRVS COL legend on this issue is a direct assertion of that Severan-granted prestige, Septimia being the dynastic name bestowed on the city by Septimius Severus himself after 194 AD when he rewarded Tyre for backing him against Pescennius Niger.

Elagabalus's reign produced a notably dense run of Tyrian civic bronzes, likely tied to the emperor's own Syrian origins and the elevation of eastern cult centers under his rule.
