Abila was one of the cities of the Decapolis, and under the Severan dynasty it maintained an active civic mint that dated its issues by a local era beginning in 64/63 BC — the Pompeian reorganization of the eastern provinces. The abbreviated dating on this piece places it squarely within Elagabalus's short, chaotic reign, when the boy-emperor's Syrian origins made him broadly palatable to eastern mints even as Rome itself recoiled from his religious impositions.
Civic bronze of this region rarely survives in quantity; the Jordan Valley and Hauran plateau were not kind to copper alloys over two millennia.
