Obverse description Laureate and draped bust of Emperor Domitian facing right, rendered in the provincial Greek style typical of Bithynian civic coinage. The laureate wreath is visible atop the imperial effigy, and drapery is indicated at the shoulder. A Greek imperial legend encircles the bust within a beaded border, identifying the emperor by his full titulature.

Additional information

Nicomedia's claim to the title "first and metropolis of Bithynia" was a fiercely contested civic honor, disputed at length with Nicaea throughout the imperial period. The legend on this piece is a direct assertion of that primacy, struck under Domitian at a moment when such honorifics required imperial sanction — and imperial favor was very much worth advertising in bronze.
