| Obverse description | Laureate bust of Commodus facing right, depicted with characteristic curly hair and beard in the Alexandrian provincial style. The emperor's effigy is rendered in moderate relief, with the laurel wreath clearly visible atop the head. Regnal year 25 of Commodus corresponds to 184–185 AD, a period when his grip on the Roman west was tightening into the paranoid autocracy that would define his final years. Alexandria's civic bronze coinage continued under Roman provincial administration, the mint operating with considerable autonomy in its iconographic choices — a freedom Roman emperors largely tolerated so long as the emperor's name appeared.
