Reverse description Athena, the patron deity of Nicaea, enthroned and seated to the left upon a high-backed throne, extending a patera in her right hand and holding an upright sword or spear in her left; a large round shield rests against the back of the seat. The composition reflects the civic pride of Nicaea through its choice of the goddess of wisdom and martial prowess as the principal reverse type. The ethnic legend ΝΙΚΑΙΕΩΝ encircles the field.
