Reverse description The goddess Cybele, Magna Mater, stands facing in the central field, clad in a long chiton with diplois and peplos draped around her arms, her head likely turreted as befitting her role as city goddess. A lion is positioned at each side of the deity, framing the composition symmetrically in the characteristic iconographic scheme associated with the cult of Cybele. A Greek legend distributed in the field and exergue records the name of the local magistrate and the ethnic of the issuing city. The reverse design reflects the strong religious and civic identity of Clazomenae within the conventus of Smyrna.
