| Reverse description | Neptune, the god of the sea, stands facing left in a commanding pose, his nude or semi-draped figure rendered in the round. In his outstretched left hand he holds a dolphin, a symbol of maritime dominion, while his right hand grasps an upright trident, the attribute most closely associated with the deity. His right foot rests upon the prow of a ship, a compositional device alluding to Sinope's proud naval heritage as a Black Sea colony. The encircling Latin colonial legend C R I F S AN CCCXIV records the founding year CCCXIV (314) of the Roman colony. The reverse field is heavily worn with a patinated green-brown surface. |
