| Obverse description | Laureate, draped and cuirassed bust of Emperor Gordian III facing right, depicted from the rear in the characteristic three-quarter back view typical of Phrygian provincial issues. Nacolea was a minor Phrygian city whose civic coinage under Gordian III belongs to the final flowering of Greek imperial bronzes in Asia Minor — a tradition that effectively died within a generation of this issue, as Gallienus ended most provincial bronze production in the 260s. The city's coins are scarce in any condition, a function of limited original output rather than attrition in circulation.
The reference VII.1#772 places this within the corpus of Phrygia and Pisidia compiled by von Aulock, the standard reference for the region.
